Belvoir Christian Crusaders built the Belvoir fortress in 1168, to defend the Kingdom of Jerusalem against Islamic armies coming from the north. The story of the fortress did not become very long, however, as the Crusaders surrendered it to Salah el-Din only twenty years later, in 1189 — and in 1218 the Muslim rulers demolished the fortress, fearing that the Crusaders might try to recapture it and use it as a military base. The name of the fortress means “beautiful view”, and indeed it is worth its name, standing on a high hill above the Jordan Valley in the east and southern Galilee in the north.
