Nimrod Fortress

The Nimrod Fortress, with a walled area of 0.04 kmē on a solitary hill, commands a view to magnificent landscapes on all sides, and may have been one of the most spectacular sites in historical Palestine. The fortress itself is not very impressing today, in its ruined state, but the landscapes still remain attractive and quite unspoilt. Tourists are somewhat rare in this region, due to its solitary location.

Nimrod Fortress was built by Ayyubid Muslims in 1230, to protect the road to Damascus from the military threat of Christian Crusaders. When the last Crusaders retreated from the Holy Land a hundred years later, the fortress no longer had much military significance. It was used as a prison for a while, and then permanently abandoned.
