Tel Nittzannah Ruins of the ancient Nabatean city Nittzannah lie in central Negev near the border of Egypt, in an area very seldom visited by tourists or even the local population. Nittzannah was a station on the eastern branch of the Spice Route, serving merchants travelling to Egypt from historical Palestine. The ruins of Nittzannah can be more properly described as a “fortification” than a “town”: the hill is not larger than a football field. The Nabatean towns of the Negev were typically founded around the first century BC, conquered by Romans two centuries later, and inhabited by Byzantine Christians since the 4th century until the wars of the 7th century.
